What probbably happened here(in my opinon). The king was training many soldiers on becoming strong nights to fight the undead invasion. The 2 low class swordys fought they were strong enough so they decided to go to the source and defeat it (Glast Helm). The main boss took control of the young swordy and gave him the much power. Years later they are both knights and the world is still fighting the undead army. The whole community bands together and all start actual fighting the army. The knight then appears and kill the old friends loved ones because he wants to actual fight him. Finally after a long while they fight he wins and eventually the undead army is beaten. He then mourns over his lost wons.
